Common Questions

What is Pilates?

Developed by Joseph Pilates, it's a form of exercise that emphasizes balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient and fluid movement.

So, who is this Joseph Pilates?

Joseph Pilates, a gymnast and boxer, was born in Germany in 1880 and had a lifelong interest in body conditioning. During World War I, he served as a nurse in a British interment camp. Pilates rigged hospital beds with springs to support his patients' weak limbs to begin their recovery process. While he worked with them, doctors noticed that patients, who practiced Pilates, improved faster than those who did not. This spring-based apparatus became the first "machine" Pilates developed. This system, combined with Mat work, formed the foundation of his method. The first official Pilates studio was set up in New York City in 1926. Dancers and performers have been using this method ever since. Today, it has also filtered into the sports and fitness world.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

  • A refreshing mind-body workout
  • It teaches body awareness, good posture, and movement. Pilates improves flexibility, agility, and economy of motion.
  • Pilates exercises train several muscle groups at once in smooth, continuous movements. By developing proper technique, you can actually re-train your body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion—invaluable for injury recovery, sports performance, and optimal health.
  • Pilates is also an extremely flexible exercise system. Modifications to the exercises allow for a range of difficulty ranging from beginning to advanced. Get the workout that best suits you now, and increase the intensity as your body conditioning improves.
